tamil cinema at its best
while we keep getting a lot of comedies from our dear captain and his heir apparent Ajith, there are still some classics that simply cannot be beaten. these are beyond time, and imagination too :)
Here are some --
hero tells heroine - "You and me are alone. I could do anything to you, but I wouldn't. Where else can you find such a decent guy"
From the movie Minnale (I have to quote in tamil for the effect) - "Oru naala, rendu naala... anju naal onna pazhaginoam" meaning "we have been together for 5 days, not just a day or two"

It started almost 50 yrs ago with "Moshakkara, chandala" and the cliches continue. Its almost hard to find a non-cliched scene in tamil movies and with all the larger than life heroes we have got, it only gets reinforced time and agian..

i dont kinda get the relation b/n vijaykanth and ajith. wht do they have in common - i know i havent watched any of ajith's recent movies - cud have better kept my mouth shut - i wud like to know anyway. :-)
The Forgotten Hero
Speaking of Captain and his Lieutenant (Ajith) made me think of another colorful, equally funny and unfortunately forgotten hero.
I am talking about the weird, wacky, but mostly beloved (drumroll please...) Ramarajan.
He is the only hero who
1) wears nothing, but dhoti
2) Goes with some outlandishly colored shirts
3) Wears lipstick.
He was the la(o)st symbol of innocence of a bygone era. I was even happy for him when he won a MP seat in the late nienties
He acted in one of the greatest classics of Tamil cinema though. (no pun intended)- Karakatakaran.
Yeah Gounder's,senthil, sarala gang and the comedy trak was the real hero, still our ramarajan played his role to perfection too.
Boy, how much i wish that gangai amaran regroups his team and presents the tamizh koorum nalulakam with Karakatakaran - reloaded (part 2)
Renuka, assuming that you have watched atleast one Vijaykanth movie (one is enuf, like oru paanai sadathukku oru parukkai padham :)), I suggest you to watch either Attagasam or Citizen :) that should do. it'll clear all your doubts :)
Hellboy, yeah I completely forgot about our dear ramarajan :-) not only lipstick, he even wears Kaajal :) he is now trying hard to re-enter politics, if that will make you happy :)
Hi, visiting ur blog for the first time..and this one reminds me of tamil cinema and its endless melodrama!
The props in the movies are so damn funny, remember the big betel leaf, in "kotta pakku?" sarathkumar's song..
and how can one forget t.rajendar for his dashy sets and of course, dialogues, all in one breath??;)
However, wanna quote one from my fav movie, "Michael, Madana.."
Manorama asks mallu kamal, "En ponnukku oru vazhi sollu.." thinking he is the rich guy,
and this mallu guy with all his accent says, "elarukkum vaasal thaan vazhi!"
Many people ridicule tamil cinema, i am here to defend them, after all I am the naattamai, and without tamil cinema i dont exist. :)
One should look at the number of classics churned out by tamil cinema, that have been adopted by all other regions of the world. Tamil cinema has been trendsetter, following its unique path (of course movies of goltland have their own eshtyle).
In the early days (atleast i am familiar with ) Beem singh set a trend of family and moral based movies. Then came Sridhar and Balachander (both K and S) who had their own unique styles, with sridhar targeting his movies for the younger generations (kadhalika neram illai is a cult movie) and balachanders concentrating on the the social/family oriented movies. Bharathiraja gave a new meaning for villages, villages never looked that beautiful before. Then there was SP Muthuraman, who churned hits after hits each with a different formula. Balu mahendra and mahendran had their own style and lot of dark themes in their movies. Then there was Mani- the great. Visu churned out family movies after another of course they ended up looking similar after some time, but still manal kayiru is one of my all time favorite. No we have sankar expert in mega hits and mass movies, bala, gautham and s.j sooryah. It is hard to characterize tamil cinema at any given time as a stereotype.
Tamil cinema has to cater to its limited audience, unlike hollywood and bollywood movies. It is hard to make a movie real slick devoid of formulas, and expect to make money. Movie industry like all other industry is a profit based industry, tamil cinema with its limited budget, must have all these formulas, to make it attractive to the mass audience.
How many of the class audience are repeat audience? Close to 0%, it is the mass audience who are the repeat audience. Of course when i say repeat audience i mean going to the theatre and watching it and not watching the pirated VCDs/ downloaded movies.

most of the movies these days are mainly male chauvinistic (read heroism).
some good ones keep coming too.
