IT park in Coimbatore

Read this article. atlast the industry and government are looking upto to our dear old coimbatore. I definitely feel that an IT park in coimbatore would be an instant hit, given to the numerous technical institutions the city has. Apart from creating more local jobs, it will also help in de-centralizing the industry to some extent.
PSG STEP was started during my third yr over there, glad to know they are now employing 500 people.

But I also have some reservations. particularly its effect on the existing textile and manufacturing industries. high paying IT jobs could increase the real estate and the avg cost of living in the region. this could drive away these low paying industries, which employs a majority of the population. as long as the IT park is kept out of the current urban limits, these industries can successfully co-exist. lets see what turns out.

In the same article, they failed to mention an important strength of the city. and that is.........
Its the hometown of yours truly :-) hehe

CBE has better tasting water but not better water infrastructure. When building these IT parks, the government should also think about better roads, public transportation, schools for the kids of the employees, etc. Otherwise these parks will only add to the chaos.

jagan, cbe has better roads than chennai :-) I saw that last nov.

Manoj, thanks for commenting machi. I hope the govt works hard on the infrastructure.

Reflex, CBE has good water. but if the population grows rapidly, I'm not sure if it will be enough for everyone :(

This is good news or what. This is a long delayed project that wa supposed to take off in 1998-1999 time frame but for various reasons never got the attention and support it deserved. But now, it seems things are moving in the right direction.
Coimbatore needs infrastructure upgrade but hey, Bangalore sucked in infrastructure before its IT boom and look where it is today. An IT park would contribute well towards the development on CBE as a whole. But as Saran pointed out, CBE is a rooted manufacturing town and anything that leads it totally away from it could be detrimental for the city in the long run.

There are two issues in this....either u create all the infrastructure and then get the industries there...or u get the industry first and the infrastructure "emerges"...the second route is what is taken mostly in India..needless to say it is lesser effecient way to attract things fast...also it tend to slow...it takes longer to know the requirements n it is basically covering the wound rather than avoiding it...either we lack people who can see long or we simply dont care....US did the first way....normally, everywhere that is the case....coz of the simple reason, business in business....no charity...so if govt says that there will b IT park in Cbe....n there are no parallel amenities(like quality housing, education etc) it id going to doom..but CBE has these things...it can true become a hub...this might ease the pressure on other industries too in the short run...but in the long run, as the IT companies pay hefty salaries, there is a real chance of cost of living going thru the roofs...it happened with Bangalore...already CBE is one of the costliest cities in TN....Is the city ready to take the crowd????

srikrishnan, thanks for the comments.
while it is nice to have everything before starting the businesses, the delay in creating the infrastructure could be harmful. Instead we can start on a small scale, establish it rapidly while scaling up the infrastructre, and create more jobs. one should feed the other, and thats how generally economies work.
we are not a rich country, and if we plan on building everything first, where is the money for that.
prices in CBE are till affordable, a plate of bhel puri still costs only Rs. 7 :-)

The reason that we are not rich beats me hallow...I dont understand the logic...look at the amount of money that got caught in various scandals in Jaya, Laloo, n who-not...if we are really that poor, where did these people get the money from???....look at the budget we allocate for Railways...is it being spent rightly??...we are not poor...actually, we are made to remain "unrich"..(I dont want to use Poor)...May be we need a better implementation mechansim...we need to overahaul the administrative machinary n decouple it from the political influence...Japan did it in its formative years...the politicians job is to persuade people to accept the admin...yeah i know it might turn out to be a beaurarcratic mess...but there can simply be no improvement if the delivery mechanism isnt good..India is like a rice field that grows well but the farmer has a faulty truck...even after a bounty harvest, he cant get the profit, coz his truck wouldnt move...
