relatives and more relatives.....

we would have known a person for a long time, and to know that they are related to us would only come as a sweet surprise. in my case it was more than a surprise. wanna know my surprise list, here it goes --- superstar rajinikanth (thru his wife latha), actor kamalhassan, director maniratnam (thru kamalhassan), chief minister jayalalithaa, writer sulman rushdie (thru his wife padma lakshmi) - to name a few.
and thru superstar now danush is also my relative (like I wanted it), and soon sonia agarwal too.
had kamalhassan been more cautious, today simran would have been my relative too (ah that would have been something).
ofcourse the path to these people goes like my grandma's second cousin's wife's grandpa's 3rd cousin's daugther's brother-in-law's brother .. hahaha
but a relation is a relation, what say you guys.

motivated by these findings, I'm now in the process of establishing a link to jesus christ and ultimately to moses and abraham :-))

P.S: The Last Blogger is also related to me. Hence he can also have his share of stardom.

The world is a very small place and yep, I can count on all the mentioned as my relatives in some form or the other. I am not sure if they count me in their list though !

This is a old post on Mangaboys on Oct 30, 2003. This was written when I put a lot of enthu for my ``Extremal Combinatorics'' class which proved ultimately futile!

Paran's Theorem (Saranyan V Rajagopalan circa 1996)
``ellame oru vattathula vandhurum''

Basic idea:
Everybody is related to each other. This means you are fortunately
or unfortunately related to Paran also.

Proof:
We will take simplified model of relationship.
* Consider only your relationship to your parents
* Ignore siblings, cousins and others

* Say you are at level i
* At level (i+1) you have your parents
- By our model you have 2 relatives
* At level (i+2) you have your grandparents
- By our model you have 2*2 relatives

............
............
............

* At level (i+50) you have your ...........
- By our model you have 2^50 relatives
- 2^50 is a huge number more than 10^15
- The number of people who lived in Earth
would be less than the above number
- You can always increase the levels
to make it valid.

* This means ...
- ... if two of us construct a tree of relationships
- there will some level which both of us share!
- Means Arnold and Paran are related and ...
- ... so too are Goundamani and Paran!

The interesting thing is how come Paran comes up with these gems. He
says something which is pretty trivial but they have really deep
implications. Is he Fermat like? Fermat wrote some theorems which
took years to prove. Or is he just an ordinary guy with a `suzhi'?
