ennada ambi....

was watching some stills of the movie "Anniyan". looks like Vikram is an iyengar boy in that movie. and as expected he was wearing a 'panchagajam' and 'kurtha' with a 'kudumi' (pony tail for males). barring the priests, almost none sports a kudumi these days (even they combine it with sunglasses for a kool look) :) I dunno where the tamil movie industry got this idea about the brahmin community.

the most hilarious ones are --

"thoppanaar" instead of "appa" -- enakku therinjadhu ellam moopanar dhaan :) I haven't heard anyone adressing their father like this :) enga appava naan ippadi koopta oadi poiduvaru :)
all married women wear 'madisaar' and unmarried girls wear 'paavadai dhavani' on all days -- can someone tell me where this happens :) and almost all the time, they'd either be singing, or drawing some 'kolam' in the agrahaaram :)
address someone "ennada ambi" -- this too happens very rarely

and all these will happen in chennai, let alone a place like Sri Rangam :)

LOL!! I cant wait to watch Anniyan. Especially after I've been the target of the riling of my friends for such a 'silly iyengar' movie being made! (Hello?? Its not my fault!! Duh!)

Haven't seen this even in Sri Rangam or in the most traditional agrahaarams in Tamil Nadu. Shankar definitely takes the cake for exaggerations in his movies.. :)

A friend of mine works for a leading MNC bank in S'pore and he still sports a kudumi. Although he was told that this doesn't fit into the corporate culture, he convinced them saying that this is for religious reasons.

Hi saranyan, people tend to steroetype different sects in a certain manner which is indeed appalling..i know certain typical manner bongs are shown in movies which is very irritating since most of them, are not like that

Anybody has an idea when Anniyan is to be released in India (wasn't it supposed to be May 20th?)? And in NJ/NY area?

You are correct, these things have gone in almost many places.

The song by Hariharan 'Iyengaru veetu azhagae' can someone write a lyric like this.?

Mudaliar veetu azhagae,
Chettiar veetu azhagae,
Muslim veetu azhagae,

etc..etc.! Will it be tolerated.!

Why Brahmins always. I hate that.!

Saranyan,

First time visiting your blog. You have got a nice blog. I too feel that the cine industry is taking Brahmin community for a ride. Recently, many of the movies were making mockery of the language and costumes...I hoped Shankar won't do that way.

Hi Saranyan,

Vow, then this movie must really be interesting. I love that olden day brahmin tamil. You call anybody "ennada ambi" now and he will feel insulted.

Modern day fathers might well beat up their sons, if they refer to them as Thoppanar, not understanding the meanings.

All these sorts of things can happen in Kollywood to attract the mass...This is nothing but similar to adding songs in a teakada, a busstop, a beach etc., all of a sudden.

Since people are enjoying the songs, they are enjoying the characters as well without knowing whether it is really practised or not.

think it started with the political parties mocking the brahmins, then filmdom caught onto the trend...semms like film makers are caught in a time wrap, clothes of lead women are tradional or are ones that wont be worn in the strets...think they need to find the middle path

Its so cliched
Even shankar doing this with writer Sujatha,
Tamil film will never change these things
Its always like these.
Settu must be always evil one, with lousy tamil, if they ever visited sowcarpet they will know most of the settus read and speak suttha thamizh and read dhinathanthi. :)

And same with 'Bhais'- Nann Sollaran poran varan, pannam kodukkale Bhai kopam padaran and they dress up with weird afghani dresses.

most of the time the language used is so racist.

Well I think, Shankar wanted to point out that this character will be leading two lives of extreme nature (or maybe twins) - one a devout and orthodox brahmin, the other a hip and very modern guy. Even though it doesnt totally reflect the current society, it might just make it easy on the director with convincing the masses about this character and the story. Remember Gentleman?
