Mumbai Express

a clean comedy movie after a long time. thankfully this one was not like Thenali or Panchathanthiram. I never thought Kamal could do such a wonderful script job for a comedy movie. hats off to him.

If you think that Kamal would have dominated this movie, then you are wrong. Its Pasupathy, the guy who played the villian in Virumaandi. this guy is unbelievable.....his facial expressions are hilarious. he is not of the Senthil, Vivek type, this is something special :) I'm sure he will go a long way.

my friends and I kept recounting most of the scenes, especially the "avaru A, B hospital la irukaaru, naan C...pudhu C" and laughed the whole weekend :) this is an offbeat movie, so most of will find the climax sudden and even disappointing. don't go for any logic, you will enjoy the express :)

But still, I don't think there can ever be a funnier one than Michael Madana Kaama Rajan...and I'm sure even Kamal knows that :)

The first half was just brilliant. Rarely have I seen a movie that packs so much laughs in one half. Too good. As I said, Kamal is a one off thing to Indian cinema. One that comes around every hundred years.

yeah Jagan, that auto-transmission was mind-blowing. "D for....Dog, illa David" :)

Ranga, I know why you guys didn't like second half. the ending is different....it may be abrupt but I liked it.

Saranyan,
After reading your review, I have decided I won't. Reason - You have touched the points I wanted to do.

But...I might touch on the Technicals on this movie..!! which actually sucked in IMHO.

I liked Pasupathy's acting. Kamal has totally underplayed himself IMHO..

After watching Chandramukhi and M.Ex..I feel that I did laugh when I watched M.Express.

true...nothing can beat MMKR...esp. "bhim boy bhim boy, andha locker-lerndhu aaru lakshatha indha avinashi naai (and nagesh quips in with a "naan thaan, naan thaan") mugathula vitteri"!!lol..can watch it any number of times and never get tired!

Good to see the support ME is getting, but to me it was disappointing, Kamal's comedies have been much better before. The movie did deliver some laughs but left me feeling empty, which wasn't the case with others like Panchatantram. Crazy Mohan is missed. IMHO it was on the lower end of slapstick comedy. Praveen in his blog describes exactly everything I feel about the movie.

Aside, Chandramukhi was very heartening, a welcome change from Rajni's usual movies. They've judiciously added in Tamil commercial elements while maintaining the story and many scenes of the Malayalam classic. Although Rajni looked younger compared to Baba, he has lost more weight, making his head and bushy hair oddly bigger for his body. But for a few wonderful moments, we could see the Rajni of the 70s when, dressed as Vettaiyan, he walks in with majestic stagger with a mocking look in his eyes. The last sequence was no doubt the high point.

MMKR was a rip-roaring comedy, no doubt but it also had jaambavaans like Nagesh, Venniraadai Moorthy, Delhi Ganesh, Manorama etc. as supporting casts. In fact, if not for the fact that I would be labeled as non-progressive, I would say that the best of the comedies and comedians in Tamil Cinema are now behind us - Chandrababu, Nagesh, Kali N. Rathnam, T.R. Ramachandran, N.S. Krishnan, Thangavelu, Thengaai Srinivasan, Ashokan (yes, Ashokan also), Manorama, Sachchu, Balaiah, V.K. Ramaswamy, Surulirajan, Venniraadai Moorthy, Cho, Kovai Sarala, Janakaraj, Senthil, Goundamani, Poornam Vishwanathan, S.V.Sekhar, Loose Mohan, Charlie etc. If you don't count Vivek and Vadivelu, the only existing comedian is the Ulaga Nayagan himself and Superstar if he is allowed to do comedy like in Thillu Mullu. Tell me about the comedy of people like Karunaas - I am still searching for comedy in their roles :-)

Narayanan, yeah the picture quality was pretty bad.

Vani, Hari - MMKR is one classic movie, all the dialogues in that are my favs :)

Gandalf, I agree with you, Rajini wasn't looking that great, but was much better compared to BABA. The last scene would be remembered for a long time, it was the Rajini of the 80s.

Kay, naanga appadi thaan pannuvoam :)

Uma, thanks for dropping by. Do you have a blog?

thennavan, some of Karunaas stuff are good. but most of them are crap. I hate charlie, for all the rubbish that he calls comedy. And as Jagan said, you forgot our dear captain :)

Prabha, wait and watch the tamil version. Don't go to the Hindi one, I dunno how it is.

Anupama, ME first half is hilarious. you would like it, don't bother about the reviews.
Yeah was busy all this week, trying to manage time better :)

I read this somewhere. THe climax would have been better off by just let the trio ride on the bike...

I didnt like the movie after maybe the first 1/2 hour. It seemed to be a rewrite of MMKR to me in many ways (including the confusion).

But, of course, Pasupathy was good. Didnt see any role or reason for Manisha in the picture.
