baharatanatyam and men

though dancing is common for both the genders, I think Bharatanatyam (and even a few other classical Indian dances) is more feminine (well its just my humble opinion, I may be wrong too :) ). I don't like watching men performing Bharatanatyam, even the established ones. and they make it even unbearable by having long hair, no moustache or beard, and a big thilak on their forehead. can't stand it man. whay can't it be normal, I mean why can't the guy perform with a frenchie. I'm sure it'd be good.

Reason for the shout out ---- watch Chandramukhi. Vineet would have a dance sequence in the final song. he has done a wonderful job, but still.....

But if you see Kamal in Salangai Oli, he never sported any long hair. Instead he even had a moustache and it wasn't that bad.

just and observation :)

What's wrong with Vineet.? My nephew made the same comment. I liked it.!! Thought he was the best face in the movie ...I meant refreshing..after seeing all the old men.!! ( Pardon me..all Rajini fans).

I like men performing Bharathanatyam..and infact want to learn too. Long hair..no..!!

Salangai Oli was a master piece.!

Narayanan, I apologize if it offended you. nothing was wrong with Vineet, just that the long hair and tilak were too much for me.

and by the way Rajini is not old. he is not even 60 :) :) enga thalaivar eppadi irundhaalum enga kannukku avaru kadavul!

Lord Nataraja is/was depicted in the Dancing form like Bharathanatyam.
Afterall,There are few successsful male dancers in this traditional art form.

Jagan, Does Kamalhassan sway his hips while he walks ,despite he is a skilled Bharatanatyam dancer??

Does your arguement fit here??

FYI:Oyilattam is the classical Tamil cultural dance

Jagan, thats also true, there were no scissors then...aana ippa irukkey :)

adengappa, as I said its just an observation. I felt it was more feminine. and KamalHassan did that one-shot, so he may not sway his hips. but I second jagan on this.

Hi saranyan, I would not agree or disagree with your opinion about dancing men...but I certainly feel men knowing classical dance are unique in their own way. I do not see it as a lack of masculinity if they they don't have a beard or a moustache, but a liking or rather a love for art. yes, some of them do look weird when into a strange dance pose.

I am not sure about the feminity and masculinity thing with Bharatnatyam. When I saw the climax dance in CM, Vineet was very graceful and way better than Jyotika. It didnt make him see any less masculine though.

Paran, this is one of the most regressive posts that I've seen on your blog and I didn't expect this from you.
You have a very male chauvinistic definition of masculinity and femininity.
I completely agree with Ranga about Vineeth being very graceful.

I found Vineet did a better job of dancing than Jyothika in this particular case. Everyone is entitled to their opinions.

Having said that, Saran, that was a *very* sexist comment. I have to agree with Manoj on this ... Making generalized and sweeping statements based on gender does qualify you to be a chauvinist. Equating grace with feminity and strength with masculinity are antiquated concepts that dont belong in this century.

Also I wonder, I went to school with a guy who used to walk around with "a big tilak on his forehead". Wonder if he was advertising his feminity also....
