a clever deal

and so finally the Bush administration has decided to sell its famed F-16 fighter jets to India, and Pakistan as well. and the claim is that there won't be any change in the balance of power. well yeah, what else when you decide to sell them to foes rather than to friends. Its been a while since Pakistan had forgotten what its GDP is and the meaning of 'development' as well. they are gonna buy these F-16's like crazy. expect Musharaff to sell even his military uniform to Al Qaeda or Taliban to pitch in money for this buy :)

unfortunately India has to match as well. Nice deal for the US.

I dont think India needs to match...It will only be an excercise in fooling ourselves and the world...when we claim, our defence policy is not Pakistan-centric unlike Pakistan's which is India centric, we need to demonstrate it with actions too..moreover, we do have equivalent fighters like MIG(though they are not maintained properly, if maintianed, they are very capable). Its high time, we came out of this mentality of balancing power with such a silly country like Pakistan.

Peace Rules... The very fact that we want to match Pakis bullet for bullet, eye for eye, dollar for dollar is our major weakness.

Let the borders areas/districts/states develop and I vote for non violent negotiations and disarmament

Krish, F-16s are a class apart man.

Sudarshan, I strongly beleive in non-violence too. India needs to match just to keep them in check, thats inevitable.

Saran
I am not sure if either you or I got the info right. Only Pak is getting the planes. India was just informed of the decision.
Well, as Sud says, for me its all about peace. So anything that could potentially cause imbalance is a matter of concern. That said, India would do well to channelise money in development projects and not just defense all the time.

Oops my bad. But the US has responded positively to the sale of the F-16s to India according to this -- http://www.hindu.com/2005/03/26/stories/2005032612950100.htm

Well... I was just abt to say what Ranga has said.. India has expressed dismay at the sale of F16s to Pak.

If what I heard before is right, Pak has paid the money in advance way back in 1980s. US supplied abt 40 birds b/n 85 & 97 and didn't bother with the rest due to Pak's nuclear intentions. Successive govt.s from Pakistan hav been pressing for F16 or return of the money.

I am not sure whether Pak wd hav to pay any money now for 'the difference in costs due to rise in prices'.

Coming to arms race, this is precisely how USSR's economy weakened in 80s. They tried to match US - bullet for bullet and ignored their other pressing needs. India shouldn't be going that way. But then, who is listening?
