our true friends .... politicians

i'm really wondering where this vote-bank politics in India is going to lead us to. first is the reservation issue and the next is the banning of Da Vinci Code in TN and Andra.

much has been spoken and written about the reservation issue. one thing has to be kept in mind, the OBC's are the majority in India. so as long as they need a reservation of seats in colleges and govt. jobs, reservation is here to stay. they are kept dumb, yes I mean dumb, for the past 60 yrs, that they would never realize that reservation is just a bull shit and there is no real benefit out of it. as pointed out by everyone, increasing seats compromises the quality of education.

in the case of Da Vinci Code, its again vote-bank politics, but of a different nature. now here, minority is treated as the majority, simply because minority sects in India are much more united. appeasing them has become a higher priority. the ruling party in TN (do I have to name it) openly derides idol worship and illtreats temple priests. and yet they would not allow the screening of Da Vinci Code as it would hurt the feelings of a particular community.

at this point I don't think if we should blaming the politicians for all thats going wrong. in fact they are our friends, trying to protect our interests and providing what we need (read reservation, color TV etc.).

Stop blaming politicians

There are few politicians who are totally illiterate, most are less educated and rare ones are well educated. On the contrary the doctors or would be doctors (leading the movement that might affect the future of millions) are so called cream of country. But when it comes to nation v/s personal interest both are almost the same. There were few doctors who wanted to call off the strike 2 days before the actual call off. One of them said “if I’ll be arrested, there could be problems with my visa. So let’s call off the strike”. Seeing this situation how can expect any thing from a politician whose life can be ruined if he comes out in our support. If people who supposedly claim to have a feeling for the nation, are not ready to risk anything for it. Then it would be unfair on our part to demand whole career from a person whom we have already labeled a corrupt, incapable of post and responsible for country’s downfall. I don’t want to increase the disgust of readers but initially one of the reasons to call of strike was that few people were not getting media and public attention as they used to get. So the gist of matter is that till the time we don’t learn to put nation above our personal interests, this country would suffer.

p.s cant tell u my identity bcoz of my direct contact ( which is unfortunate) with all these people. can mail me at

I agree it is political but I don't agree that 60 years of reservation has made them dumb. 4000 years of oppression from the upper caste has.
These are the people who cleaned our house, toilets and cow sheds while we were busy learning the Vedas by rote.
I don't agree that these OBC's are dumb as you might think. They just have skills that are not mainstream. Reading, writing and Arithmetic can come naturally to you but swimming, farming and fishing might not. Can I classify you as dumb because you cannot do the latter. We are a slave with a corporation and most of these people lead lives which are much more independent and better than us slaves. I hope you retract your statement calling backward classes "dumb"

Why are you taking a snipe at the DMK Govt. that is a few days old? Wasn't the previous JJ regime responsible for arresting Shankaracharya? Isn't Da Vinci Code banned in AP as well? Isn't Modi and folks disrupting screening for Aamir Khan movies in Gujarat?

Since you seem to be vehemently against reservations, I hope you have vehemently read the arguments about the other side as well. If you have not, www.theotherindia.org is a good place to start

Also the previous Union Govt. banned "Water" by Deepa Mehta, which "minority" community were they trying to please?

Yet..they banned this movie.

Shame on TN and the other govts.who banned DVC..just for the vote bank.!

anonymous, I agree that SC/STs were suppressed by the higher castes. not just the upper castes, but the so called OBCs were also suppressing the SC/STs. so whats the justification in reservation for the OBCs. can you please tell me.

the whole point is this reservation issue is being treated as a punishment to the highest caste. if it is so, then make it fair and just give reservation to the ones that need.

1. I cannot believe that you are justifying the lack of responsibility of the politicians in your first post. If you stand for election for a public office and want to be elected, that automatically creates a lot of onus for delivering the promises. True, in a democracy all are equal but still, one cannot expect to be holding a post but in the end have the same set of responsibilities as an ordinary citizen. So I am assuming that you are suggesting that a common (wo)man should sacrifice everything he/she built in life while a public servant only wants to have additional power(through his/her post) andnot the additional responsibilities that come with the additional power? So, ofcourse the common man at some point will have to favor his personal life. Are you expecting the lone individual to forgo his life/money/family while powerful post holders wallow in money/power? You cannot put the common man and the politician on the same platform and compare simply because they have unequal powers and with greater power comes greater responsibility(from the movie Spiderman).

2. I am not sure what Saranyan meant but I would be against all the state governments if they have double standards for different religions and groups. Either be liberal with all of the groups or be strict to all the groups. Otherwise touting your country to be a "secular" nation is pure BS.

3. I agree with you on the dumb part ... nobody is dumb. We all have our individual talents and contributions and thus form our sustainable communities. I would rather be in an equal community of all people helping each other rather than in an elitist community chanting vedas to so many Gods whom we do not even know if they exist.

BUT what I do not agree is the allusion in your statement that these people are called dumb just because they are OBC. That is not necessarily so ... but they are dumb simply because many of the OBC people who use this advantage and get college seats are already rich with educated parents and are just plain lazy to study more since they know they will make the cut because they are OBC.

4. I have read the otherindia.org website a lot of times. What such sites cleverly conceal is the fact that people who are suffering are primarily in SC/ST category and also with poor backgrounds. NOT OBC category people mind you. It is truly sad when we read the atrocities faced by these poor SC/ST people ...

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/06/0602_030602_untouchables.html

But the point is, the sufferings seem to be incurred by the poor sections of SC/ST. Where does OBC come into the picture here? If you dwell deeper into the statistics, you can realize that OBC people have had a significant hand in committing these atrocities. So, what logic is there to give any reservation to OBCs(besides vote banks ofcourse!). Also ... what logic is there to give reservations for any caste person if his/her parents are affluent, well educated urban dwellers?(again, besides vote banks ofcourse!). On the same lines ... what logic is there to deny any help for a person from OC category who happens to be very poor ... is the government forcing that person to pay for the sins of his/her ancestors? Coincidentally, those in OC categories also have less vote banks ... interesting would'nt you think? So, the OBC people(being large vote banks) force dalits to eat feces on one side(example: thevars in Tamil Nadu during caste riots in 90s) and on the other side take their begging bowls out for more reservations saying they have been oppressed for 4000 years? I guess we have the predator and prey confused here.

Why do you think that today all government jobs have pathetic levels of quality? Thats because they have been filled up with undeserving people for the last 60 years, inspite of the fact that Dr. Ambedkar himself advocated caste based reservations only for 1 generation.

If all you reservation supporting people truly want to help the oppressed, then why do you not support economy based reservations, so that any poor person regardless of who his/her father or grandfather is will get the benefits? Why do you people always shrug that option off and then rant and rave about 4000 year histories? Is it sensible to craft present day policies based on what happened 4000 years ago?

guys, you have totally got me wrong on the "dumb" part. I didn't mean to say that OBCs are dumb as they aren't educated and such. rather they are dumb enough to believe that reservation is a must and that it will create an equal society. whats the use in reserving seats if it compromises quality. at that point, it doesn't matter if you get your degree from an IIT or IIM.

and I'm equally against govts which adopt double standards (just that I pointed DMK as an example, a pretty easy one huh).

as Arun pointed out, the benefits of reservation is definitely not reaching the needy. PMK in tamil nadu desperately needs reservation for OBCs. but tell me if they can first co-exist with the dalits.
