double standards
had an interesting talk with fellow blogger ranga today. we were discussing about stem cell research and how useful it could be towards finding a cure for cancer. its a pity that all these conservative lawmakers are trying to stop this important work in the name of "pro-life". and these are the same guys that approve the death penalty. maybe their faith condones double standards.
just lost a close friend to cancer. its really painful guys, and when you learn that someone is trying to put a cap on finding a cure for this deadly disease, it just leaves you with nothing but uncontrollable anger.

i am sorry abt ur friend... sometimes decision of few proves to be a vital factor between life and death of many....
jagan, its not about technology reaching the wrong hands. its about religion, and thats all.
me, thats right. and these few are here to ruin our lives forever.
I can't believe they would pull religion into it. What about some common sense first?
I will echo Sarans thought since the post came from our conversation recently. A lost friend is definitely a time to pause and think if things could have been done otherwise and his life be saved.
Stem cell research can make a difference and nothing, not relegion, not politics, not anything should come before someone's life and we are talking possibly saving millions of lives in the future here.
Though I agree that scientific research and development is key to improving life, I don't feel it should be at the expense of it. In my opinion, an embryo is a life. And that life should have rights like any other. Why can't we conduct this research using placentas, umbilical cords, and other means which do not tamper with nature?
I do not believe that anyone who isn't incredibly wealthy is ever going to benefit from these treatments, when and if they ever arrive. We are only talking about Federal funding and not private funding for Embryo stem cell research. Private research can go on regardless so long as no tax dollars are used. There is no restriction on using Adult stem cells or placenta for finding cure for those diseases and it is also not clear how people can afford to these treatments, when there are more than 30% in this country without health insurance. Those who can afford it may get treatments for their illnesses and if it all it gets proven beyond doubt that this is indeed the life safer then everyone including right wing republicans who oppose this, may change their views. It is interesting to note that Clinton did allow federal funding to this project as long as the cell is extracted using private funds. Again that is a Democrat president, whose view is entirely different than a republican.
Also Keep in mind, under current policy, the funding for this project is available for the cells already isolated and not for any new cells from the date Bush announced this policy before his re-election. Again, This is not banned in UK and any advancement in this area by their researchers will be noticed through out the world.
its hard to prevent stem cell research, theyll make noise, try and all, but in th end itll be done, primarily caue there is a deman for it, its big money.

In my opinion the decisions are more on political compulsions than religious beliefs. Also I seriously doubt that we have made significant progress on this field to save someone at this juncture. May be things may change for better in future.
I have been passively looking at the blogs for quite sometime and this topic made me express my views. Hope to contribute more in future and keep up your good work.

Balaji, I can only partly agree with you. Spending tax payers money on something that they don't wish is definitely not going to happen. and I'm not supporting too.
but the whole nation isn't against it, rather its perfectly polarized. in a democratic country, just because some party came to power, you cannot completely abandon everything thats against your beleifs.
yes definitely its out of political compulsions ... and why is that? its because these politicians came to power with a religious agenda, didn't they? and thats what I don't like.

I would not agree on the issue being completely polarized. In fact California was the only state to put this on ballot last election and get the consent to spend the money, but Governor chose not to because of debt situation in California even though in public he has not leaned one side or the other (Again may be because of his re-election due with in next 2 years). Some of the states such as Wisconsin chose to spend private money for the funding the project and also they got some help from celebrities fighting Parkinson disease. Most of the other states are not even leaning one side or the other.
Republicans are always known for their anti-choice beliefs (on abortion), conservative thinking and their policies towards matters such as this, reflect their beliefs. I am not sure what you categorize as religious agenda (Most of the democrats or republicans are Catholics, so personally how do you think it would matter?)
If something happens in the Cancer world, that would be great.. I can recall that tamil music director Mahesh (friend of Kamal) had also died of cancer only.
In the recent 'Kumudham' I read that Ajay Devgam and Kajol had donated their winnings of 'KBC Star show' (Rs.1 crore) to 'Mahesh Cancer Trust' set up in Chennai...
good that, these kind of things are happening.. if a final remedy is invented, that would be great.

Double standards - Yeah, i agree. I just read in India west Newspaper about Raveena Tandon storing her stem cells. The cost was 29000 rupees with around 2K every year.!!
