drinking and IT

read this article in hindu.

hotels and bars in chennai want to decrease the legal age for drinking from 21 to 18. and the reason they give ... "growth of business process outsourcing and information technology in the city."

now how can IT industry affect the drinking pattern of the society. at 18, people are still in college. few work in call centers at that age, but they are really in need of that extra money and I don't think they are the standard "friday night partying" type.

pathetic reasoning, the hotel industry could be bit more creative.

i wonder whether they actually check proof of age in those hotels and bars.

i guess except the 5 star hotels most other places turn a blind eye to age. even if they turn our guys out, we can always walk to the TASMAK shop at the corner and get what we want :-)

legal age for drinking is a big mockery in India. I really hope it changes quickly and we enforce the legal age for drinking rigourously

thats right hellboy. and there is no state ID or anything for age proof. only thing is drivers license and that can be easily forged :)

well even now hotels dont check for proof of age, so i doubt if it actually makes a difference, but the IT arguement is the bigest joke ive heard. i dont get it how growth in IT correlates wit lowering drinking age, because firms employ people who are 20-21 not younger than that

Saranyan,

Reading the article, it is not clear to me how you relate the reducing drinking age from 21 to 18 attributed to "growth of business process outsourcing and information technology in the city." comment

To me, reading the article, it seems that the above reason is used in the context of relaxing the hours of operation and which seems to be very true in the growing globalized economy which India is currently on.

Most of the 18 year olds who party are from affluent families and they are going to do irrespective of whether you want to legalize or not.

strange reasons... for practical reasons, these guys don't even check the age..

are they checking in theatres screening adult movies? they don't... they need business.

I believe, this is just to legalise certain issues like this..

Saranyan,
Hotels wants to make money and they don't mind abt the morals. What hotels say is a bit true these days.
